The Time I Ate Guinea Pig In Peru

On my travels round the globe I have tried many and various food types and will be detailing them regularly. In this report, I take you to Peru where I tried Guinea Pig! Also known as Cui.

I had just finished the epic Inca Trail, which came to a stunning climax in the lost Inca City of Machu Picchu so spirits were high and I was just in awe of the amazing Sacred Valley in Peru. After the Inca Trail came to a close in Machu Picchu, we had been invited for lunch by our tour guide. We had agreed to meet in Chaski Restaurant in Aguas Calientes, PERU at 3 pm. I was hungry and wanted something local. PLUS, it was Christmas Day!!

As a child Christmas Dinner was always a special occassion. It was nice that I could visit the church in Aguas Calientes before heading to Chaski Restaurant for the Peruvian Christmas Dinner, with a difference.

I hadn't eaten Guinea Pig before and was hotly anticipating it. I was in Peru of course, but it is also popular in Ecuador. I'm always up for trying new food, but I don't always finish it if I don't like it!

There were a couple of options with the Guinea Pig Christmas Dinner. The choices were either Cuy Al Horno which is Roasted Guinea Pig. This comes with potatoes, cheese and salad. There is also the option of Pepian de Cuy which is Stewed Guinea Pig and that one is topped with peanut sauce and comes with rice and spuds. The price of them both was 55 Soles. I went for the Roasted option as I like cheese. It was nice to be having potatoes on Christmas Day.

The entire Guinea Pig was on the plate, as you can see head and all! It was a cheers all round for our big group of Inca Trail survivors as we ate and drank to our hearts content!

Right so I had the guinea pig, all roasted and for my Christmas Dinner - was it any good? Yes because I ate most of it. You had to pick at the bones for a lot of it and to be honest there were not large chunks of meat in it. But I try anything once and I loved it. It tasted slightly like chicken. After having my guinea pig for Christmas Dinner it was now time for a few beers to relax and celebrate having done the mega 4 day Inca Trail. Guinea Pig in Peru - yes - go and try it!! Happy eating and don't stop living!

Golfing Opportunities In Naples Florida

Five Ideas For Seeing Soweto Properly

Soweto is an incredible township and I have to say - head there and see it!! Not only is it one of the most famous townships in South Africa but it has a lot of history and more importantly things to see and do. Top 5s are difficult but I'm going to try! I've had to narrow it down but here goes...

1. Stay with a local Sowetan family:

This was a highlight of my Soweto experience, as I stayed with Rachel in her home in Orlando East in Soweto. It gives you an insight into what life is about here in this famous township. Just sitting watching TV with her and her son was a happy night.

2. Check out Nelson Mandela's House:

You have to make the trip to 8115 Vilakazi Street in Soweto. This is Nelson Mandela's former house and now runs as a fully functional museum. You can walk all around the house where Nelson once lived and get your fix of Apartheid history while you are at it. This is easy to walk to if you are staying in Soweto Backpackers, and the streets are generally safe to walk around. Entrance was 10 Rand for me at the time (as I blagged a student entry - but bought plenty of souvenirs in the Hector Pieterson Museum - which didn't make my top 5 but I also recommend it). I believe the entrance fee is now 20 Rand to get in - well worth it and remember you are also contributing for the up keep of this amazing community.

3. Drink with the locals in a Shebeen:

You haven't really sampled South African township culture until you've been to a Shebeen! I'm serious! These are an absolutely quality experience - you meet, talk and enjoy the locals who sit and relax to their heart's content in Shebeens. You will try the Joburg Beer in Soweto which is pink in colour, low in alcohol percentage and shared by drinking out of a large tub. You'll be made welcome and you will love talking to the locals. Do it!

4. Do A Bicycle Tour:

Another amazing thing to do in Soweto is a local bicycle tour - this means you get to parts of Soweto not easily reached on foot or by car. You will visit different parts of the mammoth township on the same day and have a chance to meet locals and chat away and see their daily lives. The Soweto Backpackers do a good bicycle tour which has featured in a lot of travel books and websites. You will also get a local tour guide who can explain everything to you at points during your cycle through this cultured township.

5. The Hector Pieterson Museum:

The Hector Pieterson Museum is useful and insightful to understand the history of Soweto and particularly the Soweto Uprising in 1976. This museum sits on well maintained streets with tributes in the place where Hector Pieterson was once shot dead. It's a good place to get to grips with the local story. This is definitely in my top 5 things to do while staying in Soweto!

Terrible Airline Companies

Here is my list of the worst airline companies in the world!

1. Taca in Peru

Taca Airlines are based in Peru. On my South American trip in 2010 - 2011, I stupidly booked a flight with Taca because the flight was SO CHEAP. They are a real budget airline and I ended up booking a flight from Cuzco to Lima which would have been cheaper and faster than the bus at the time. It wasn't so in the end. They cancelled my flight and refused to put me on another one. A horrible few days of travel

2. Jetstar a budget Airline

You should avoid Jetstar - they are a horrible company with a bad reputation. They often have delayed flights, cancelled flights and never offer any kind of compensation. As companies go they are easily one of the worst out there!!

3. AEROLINEAS ARGENTINAS

In Argentina I had a nightmare with Aerolineas as they scheduled a flight of mine before the first flight had even left the city the second flight needed to be in, in order for it to arrive on time.

- on three occasions they changed my flight time

- changed the airport of my first flight (from Jorge Newberry to Ezeiza, Buenos Aires)

- cancelled an entire flight

- they then delayed my new flight and refused to give me a coffee for free

- and most ridiculous of all they later scheduled me onto a second flight which would leave before the first flight had landed. Their excuse for this was a computer error.

4. Airline Company Cathay Pacific

This airline company Cathay Pacific lost my bag in 2012. It was totally crazy. After losing it they then claimed that I hadn't even handed my bag in which was total negligence on their side as I handed it in and they managed to not even put it on my flight. This meant when I was in Belfast for 5 days my bag was in Hong Kong. I finally got it sent across but with no compensation offered.

5. AIR ASIA

I hate Air Asia - they are a horrible airline company and I urge you all not to fly with them. The cancelled, delayed, changed lots of my flights down the years. When they did that they didn't even offer an apology or a free cup of tea or coffee. A hotel room would have been nice but we ended up sleeping on the floor at the airport.

- Never trust Air Asia

So fellow travellers, please let me know what airline companies you think are terrible. This is my list of 5 shit airline companies, all from personal travel experiences. I won't be booking with them again or recommending them. And a travel writer and blogger is exactly the person they don't need to upset.

When Broccoli Harvesting Turns Shit

While living in Tasmania I worked all over the place, doing broccoli farming in 13 different farms! I loved it and urge you all to try farming in Tasmania. Earning a living as a broccoli farmer was great!

If you've ever done processed or manual broccoli cutting you will know that a tractor follows you down the countless paddocks of broccoli, you just cut it as fast as you can and throw it into the crates on the tractor. The thing is, once you start a row, you have to go to the end. There is no respite - so basically carry water in your pocket and sip it at the end of each row, where you can also go to the toilet if you need. Admittedly this is much easier for guys.

So one day I was on a big farm in a place called East Sassafras, northern Tasmania. There was a hill in the field, and beyond the hill you would be miles away from the base. The base is where you park you car, munch your lunch and yes, there is a portable toilet there! I had become quite an experienced broccoli cutter...

It was 18th March 2010, the morning after St. Patrick's Night, so a few of our team had gone down to Molly Malone's pub, myself obviously included to meet another travelling Northern Irishman, Chaz Fitzsimmons.

Next morning was a 7am start as usual and nothing was a problem. After lunch however, we were about half way through a stretch of broccoli when I knew I needed to go to the toilet, of the number 2 variety. It was the first time this had happened while on a broccoli field. Our boss and top lady, Rebecca Gaby was working alongside us that day and I yelled over, "I'll catch you up, I need a shit" and off I ran. Initially I was going to run all the way back to the portable toilet but it was about a kilometre walk, so I pulled over at the side and crouched down in the paddock. It was out of control let's just say.

Just after taking my trousers and boots off I used leaves from broccoli plants to clean my bum. It wasn't really enough so my underpants had to be used as toilet roll and were then dumped in behind a tree near the fence. Just then my team and tractor arrived back at the top of the hill. They had known I had ran to take a shit, but now they could see me running with my trousers down desperately trying to make it back to cut more broccoli.

Apart from that it was a good day in the field. Later on that night, I washed my clothes, shamelessly realising I couldn't tell the difference between shit and mud. Don't Stop Living!

The Fujian Tulou Buildings in Fujian Province, CHINA - These are scattered all over the central Fujian region and are amazing old style buildings, once used to house entire clans and large families. Keeping the enemy at bay, these houses are round, square and very insular and self sufficient. I toured around lots of them and have written extensively about them - a real world heritage gem in Fujian if truth be told. Worth seeing! []
