Backpacking In Millisle

By Jonny Blair

Millisle in Northern Ireland is worth a trip for any tourist. This is a pure fire village of deep intensity and deserves to be seen, it is close to the town of Donaghadee and just a bit further along the Ards peninsula than Bangor or Groomsport. Belfast is the Northern Irish capital city and you can fly into the airport there ready to explore Millisle. Here in Millisle while backpacking through it, you will get nice views and a classic windmill

The Windmill is definitely one to get on your list as it looks amazing. The best recommendations here:

- The massive Church in Millisle - Abbey Villa Football Club stadium - The Windmill at Ballycopeland and the information kiosk with it

- The park by the beach and the reservoir - Harbour and down to the beach - The Marvellous Church of Saint Patrick, the famous dude

- The Presbyterian Religious building in the village - A building which houses a jail type college for the people in Northern Ireland - The First & Last local public house

- The home for bad boys

- 12th July Lodges go from the main Orange Hall in Millisle

- A place where they tried to build a runway but it was never finished

- The wee farm area on the Road by Woburn

- A centre which makes handmade goods such as pottery and also serves tea, coffee and snacks

Two thousand and three hundred people live in Millisle

Where to be based overnight:

- A really awesome park where you can put up a tent, campervan or even a caravan

- A massive house known locally as the "Pinecroft"

- Ocean water drifting in

- Summer time camping location near Millisle, but houses in the village area by Ballywhiskin

Head to the "First & Last" public house for a local beer and a bite

The fish and chip shop called McClements is recommended

For coffee, tea and handmake crafts - pottery, crockery etc. head to "Eden Pottery"

A little bit of unusual information about Millisle:

- Some people of Jewish origin once came here as protection during the wars

- There are less references to wall murals and political messages here in Millisle.

Moving from one place to another:

- You can use buses to get from places like Bangor, Newtownards and Belfast from Millisle. The Translink company has buses that are numbered 10C and 9 or even 9B and they can help you out.

People that are well known from the Millisle region:

- Gordon Budget

- Dave Boy McSweeney

The website for backpackers in Northern Ireland acts as an absolutely outstanding resource for anyone wishing to visit this ice cool zone on planet earth.

This idea for Backpacking in Northern Ireland was decided as a plan way back in 2013 and finally launched in 2014 by local Bangor lad Jonny Blair. Also on the project are Lyndsay Scott, Abbi Morrison and Allan Wilson, all true experts in the Northern Ireland field.
